Lap Band Glossary

Anesthesia - It is the process by which patient lose his feelings and sensation. It is normally pre employed surgical process done by drugs. After this process patient will not feel any pain.

Access port - It is the port of lap band device for its adjustment after surgery.

Bariatric - It is the science of treatment and prevention of obesity.

Bariatric Surgery - A kind of surgery done to cure obesity.

Bile - A fluid discharged by the liver into the intestines that helps in the digestive process.

BMI (Body Mass Index) - It is the unit of measuring obesity. BMI is measured by calculating the ratio of weight and height of a person.

BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in meters)2

Or

BMI = weight in pounds ÷ (height in inches)2 x 703

Lap band - It is the device or instrument which helps in losing weight.

Lap band surgeon - A specialist professional in lap band surgery.

Laparoscopy - A surgical approach in which surgeon makes some small incisions in abdomen of patient to perform the desired work.

Morbid Obesity - An epidemic disease in which patient body mass index is 40 or above 40.

Obesity - A condition in which patient body mass index is 30 or between 30 and 40.
