Lap Band Surgery
Lap band surgery is performed to create a small mini stomach or pouch in the upper part of stomach. It is done in two ways- open surgery and laparoscopic. In olden days when technology is not advances lap band surgery was done through open surgery procedure, but now days it is done through laparoscopic surgery.
Open surgery procedure is simple and similar to traditional general stomach surgery. In open surgery a big incision is made in the abdomen and then lap band will be placed. On the completion of placement of band the incision will be stitched. Open surgery is simple than laparoscopy but in this surgery surgeon have to make a large incision so it takes more time than laparoscopic. Recovery period of open surgery is also large.
In laparoscopic surgery five tiny 1cm incisions are made in the abdomen of patient. First incision is used to insert a video camera inside the abdomen, second incision is used to insert torch, third and fourth incision are made to insert surgical instruments inside the abdomen. Fifth and last incision is made to insert lap band inside the abdomen. Laparoscopy is painless, safe and takes less time in surgery procedure and recovery. The surgeon sees the video of inside abdomen on computer screen and with the help the help of surgical instrument place the lap band on upper part of stomach.
After this the surgeon places the access port below the abdomen skin for further adjustment. Now the operation completes and the incisions are stitched or closed with the bands. Lap band surgery is done in the presence of general anesthesia and the whole process will take half to one hour.
In the surgical procedure lap band is placed around the upper part of stomach forming approximately 15cc pouch. Lap band is designed to be inflated or deflated at any time after the surgery. This will helps the obese patient in continuous weight loss. The adjustment of lap band is done in radiology suite and takes fifteen minutes.
