Lap Band
Lap band is a weight loss device placed on stomach of obese patient through laparoscopy. The lap band instrument is consist of three parts-
Band- The physical structure of band is like a wristwatch. It is circular and hollow in nature. One can imagine band like a circular tube. For the adjustment of lap band saline in filled into it through a tube attached with it.
Tube- The tube is also made of silicon and used to transfer saline from access port to band.
Access Port- it is a circular port attached with tube and made of silicon. There is a silicon membrane at the top of port to restrict the saline to come out of band. The access port is placed under the skin for adjustment.
The lap band instrument is not new; the first lap band was developed by Obtech Medical in 1985 in Sweden. After that BioEnterics ® LAP-BAND ® Adjustable Gastric Banding System was introduced by INAMED Health an American company. In June 2001 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the lap band. From 1985 to till now there is lot of change in the technology of lap band. Now very advanced lap bands are available in market, which are easy to place in stomach.
