Risk of Lap Band Surgery
Lap band surgery is done through laparoscopic procedure so there is no risk in surgery. Lap band weight loss system has very less risk in comparison to other weight loss methods. The most common risk and complications in lap band system are as-
Access Port Infection- This is the most common risk, the rate of this infection is about ten percent. In such situations the access port will be replaced by a new one. The infection is mainly due to erosion of port.
Band Erosion- Risk rate of band erosion is about three percent. This situation arises due to the erosion of band. When this complication arises, the buckle of lap band will be moved.
Reservoir/Tubing Risk- this complication will takes in about six percent patients.
Slipping of Lap Band- Slipping or prolapsed of lap band is occurs in fourteen percent patients. In this risk or complication the band will slips to upward and the size of stomach will change to its original size.
Re-surgery- Re-surgery will be required in about ten percent of cases. This will be required due to complication in lap band or when patient does not tolerate the lap band or if he may not lose desired weight.
Open Surgery Risk- Lap band surgery is done through laparoscopic procedure but there are about one and half percent of cases in which the lap band surgery done through open surgery. So whatever risks and complications in open surgery also takes place in lap band system.
Death of Patient- Only 0.1% patient die who have lap band. Due to the advancement in technology this rate also decreases.
